Computer Timeline
Mainframes
Mainframes are large, powerful computers that have the ability to execute billions of commands and process information synchronously. They are used by banks to manage their customer's accounts and many other prestigious businesses that rely on multitasking machines. A disadvantage of mainframes is that they are much slower than a supercomputer but they are less expensive.
Supercomputers

Supercomputers are the fastest computers in the world and, because of this it, very few establishes can afford such an expensive computer seeing as they cost approximately 100 million pounds to make. They are usually used by people conducting research projects, for example: pharmaceutical companies searching for new drugs. However, there are some disadvantages:
- They generate so much heat, they must be housed in specific rooms with many requirements, like: equipped with environmental controls and air conditioning systems.
-The rooms must also be dust free and filters have to be bought to keep the air clean.
-They are extremely expensive.
-Specialists have to be recruited to work the complex systems.

Storing large amounts of data and carrying millions of operations per second, PCs are common in most households and work environments. They are used for many different tasks. A few examples are:
-Running applications like databases, power points and word processors.
-Creating, playing and downloading music.
-Editing videos.
-Accessing the internet for research, work or entertainment.
Advantages are that they are generally more powerful than net books and laptops (because and can store up to 1TB of data. However, they are not portable.

Laptops

Laptops are portable computers.
Advantages:
-Laptops are small and portable.
-Laptops have a powerful battery which means it can be used on the go, ensuring you charged it before.
-Laptops has just as much processing power, memory and the same size disk. The same software, like Microsoft, can be installed on a laptop.
-They can connect to 3G, Wi-fi or a physical network connection.
Disadvantages:
-They can become quite heavy.
-Laptops must be charged regularly.
-Because the keyboard is smaller than a PCs, some people find the keyboard on a laptop hard to see.

Netbooks are much smaller and lighter than a laptop.
Disadvantages:
-They don't have a hard disk but use a flash memory, meaning they don't have such a big memory capacity.
-Is slower at processing data because it has less RAM than a laptop or PC.

Smartphones
Smartphones are used by millions internationally.
Advantages
-There are a range of apps that can do just about everything from monitoring weight and calories to translating a different language.
-There are some potentially lifesaving features like GPS that can pinpoint your location in a crisis.
Disadvantages
-They can be expensive.
-Too much expose to phones can cause cancer.
